Loco Moco – Simple Budget Edition

I really like dishes involving a gravy or sauce of some kind. I especially like such dishes with rice, so when I heard about loco moco, a Hawaiian dish, I decided that I wanted to have some. Loco moco is fairly simple, consisting of steamed rice, a hamburger patty, a sunny side up egg, and topped with a brown gravy.

This recipe aims to be quick and easy, mostly because I wanted to eat something quick and easy when I made this. As such, as long as you have all the ingredients ready, it shouldn’t take more than 10-15 minutes to cook.

This recipe is nowhere near complex but you could easily make it complex if you wanted to for big improvements. For example, you can saute some diced sweet onion and add it to the gravy mix or add that diced sweet onion to your patty along with some bread crumbs. Be creative, use your cooking knowledge to improve this!

Gravy is good

Patty

  • 6-8 oz. ground beef (90% lean preferred)
  • Garlic Powder
  • Onion Powder
  • Salt
  • Ground Black Pepper
  • White Pepper Powder

Gravy

  • 1 Cup Beef Broth or Stock
  • 2 Tsp. Corn/Potato Starch
  • 1 Tbsp. Water

Other

  • Eggs
  • 1Tbsp. Butter
  • Cooked Steamed Rice
  • 1 Tbsp. Vegetable Oil

Directions

  1. Combine the ground beef and seasonings (adding and omitting what you like or dislike) and form into a patty. Indent the center of the patty so that it’s thinner than the edges. This helps it cook evenly
  2. Heat oil in your pan or skillet.
  3. Put the patty into the pan and cover with a lid for 3-4 minutes. Then remove the lid and flip the patty and cover for another 3-4 minutes.
  4. If you have a meat thermometer, check if the patty is at least 160°F (for medium) or your desired doneness. If not, hopefully it’s cooked enough.
  5. Remove the patty from the pan, leaving the drippings and let it rest on the plate. Pour the beef broth into the pan and bring to high heat. Mix the starch and water in a small container and gently pour the mixture into the broth to thicken it. Reduce to desired thickness.
  6. As the gravy is boiling, put a tablespoon of butter onto a small pan and bring it to medium low heat. Once melted, crack an egg or two into the pan and cover with a lid. Cook until the whites have set (or to your desired doneness)
  7. Scoop rice onto a plate, place the patty on top of the rice, place the egg(s) on top of the patty, then pour the gravy on top of everything. Serve.
